Knight School is a chess-improvement app. It has no ads, no advertising networks, and no data brokers. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not track you across other websites or apps. This page describes everything we actually collect and why.
You can use most of it without an account
Lessons, puzzles, the openings library, playing against bots, and unlimited game analysis all work without signing in. Without an account, your progress is stored only in your own browser or device and we hold nothing that identifies you.
What we collect if you create an account
- Email address and display name. Used to sign you in and to attach your progress to you.
- A password hash if you sign up with a password. We store a bcrypt hash, never the password itself.
- Your learning data: Knight Score, skill mastery, lesson and exam progress, puzzle attempts, and your Mistake Deck cards with their review schedule.
- Correspondence games you start with a friend, including the moves.
Signing in with Google or Apple
If you sign in with Google or with Apple, we receive your verified email address and, where you allow it, your name. We do not receive your password. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we only ever see the private relay address Apple generates, and that becomes the account's address.
Analytics
We keep first-party daily counters — page views, sign-ins, sign-ups — which are aggregate totals, not per-person histories. We also use Google Analytics 4 for the same kind of aggregate traffic reporting; Google acts as a processor and its own privacy terms apply. We do not enable Google Analytics advertising features, audience export, or cross-site tracking.
The AI Coach
When you ask the AI Coach a question, the chess position and your question are sent to our model provider (currently OpenAI and xAI) to generate the answer. Do not put personal information into coach questions. Chess positions are not linked to your identity when sent.
Game analysis stays on your device
The chess engine runs entirely inside your browser or app. Games you analyze are not uploaded, and we never receive them unless you explicitly save mistakes from one into your Mistake Deck.
We use Resend to deliver account and progress-summary emails. We do not sell your address or use it for advertising.
Payments
Knight School is free. If paid plans are offered in future, card details would be handled by Stripe and never stored by us.
Cookies
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in, and Google Analytics sets its own measurement cookies. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Children
Knight School is designed to be safe for young players: there is no chat, no messaging, no user-generated content, and no advertising. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children beyond the account details above. If you are a parent who believes your child created an account and you want it removed, contact us at ryanbyrd@gmail.com and we will delete it.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account at any time from your account page. Deletion is immediate and removes your progress, Mistake Deck, puzzle history, and correspondence games. It cannot be undone. Aggregate analytics counters, which contain nothing that identifies you, are not affected.
How long we keep things
Account and learning data are kept until you delete your account. Aggregate daily counters are retained indefinitely because they identify no one.
Where data is processed
Knight School runs on Vercel with a Neon Postgres database, and data may be processed in the United States.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. Deletion is available directly in the app; for anything else, email ryanbyrd@gmail.com and we will respond.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page.
