Skewers

A SKEWER is a pin turned inside out: the MORE valuable piece stands in front, gets attacked, and must move — exposing the piece hiding behind it.

When the front piece is the king, the skewer is unanswerable: the king is legally required to move out of check, and you take whatever was sheltering behind.
