Pawn Chains & Pawn Breaks
A PAWN CHAIN is a diagonal staircase — like White pawns on d4 and e5 versus Black's on d5 and e6 (the French structure). Chains LOCK the center: no piece passes, no file opens by itself.
Two pieces of vocabulary decide everything:
• the HEAD (e5 for White) — the advanced tip, cramping the enemy • the BASE (d4) — the rearmost pawn, holding the whole staircase up
Nimzowitsch's law: attack the chain at its BASE. Kill the root and the tree falls. And since pawns can't attack diagonally backward, the only tool that attacks a base is… another pawn. Those attacking moves are called PAWN BREAKS, and in closed positions they are the entire game.
