Hanging Pieces & Counting

Before anything else, know what things are worth:

Pawn = 1 · Knight = 3 · Bishop = 3 · Rook = 5 · Queen = 9. The king has no number — losing it loses the game.

These values are a guide, not a law. But at this stage of your chess life: trust the numbers.
