Fight for the Center
Why does everyone fight over e4, d4, e5, d5? Reach.
Look at these two knights. From d5 — near the center — a knight controls EIGHT squares. From a1, it controls two. Same piece, four times the power. The center is high ground: pieces standing there (or aiming there) simply do more.
As Morefield's first principle puts it: control the center.
